Skin Care Tips for Men

September 3rd, 2011

Men, your skin care needs are just as important as those of women. A quick lather with ordinary soap is certain to cleanse the surface of your skin but will do nothing to deep clean, nourish or protect the delicate epidermis of the face. Your face requires special attention because it is the first thing that people notice when they see you. Taking the time to learn how to care for your skin is essential for a healthy, radiant face at any age.

Many companies target sales of skin care products to female consumers and develop few options for men. Despite this obstacle, men address the same facial care issues as their female counterparts. Men have skin that is up to 15 percent oilier than that of women, and they tend to have much larger pores. Deep cleansing releases unhealthy build-up from your pores and prevent it from accumulating. Gentle exfoliation sloughs dead skin from the surface of the skin and allows healthy new cells to be seen. Soaps with perfumes or harsh exfoliants, such as ground nuts or seeds, should be avoided. These can irritate or even tear the delicate skin of your face. Select a facial soap with few or no chemical additives, which may also cause damage to the epidermis.

Shavers should select gentle, unscented creams or soaps that protect from razor burn while still facilitating a close shave. Shaving soap is manually worked into a thick lather that lifts whiskers to a standing position to make removal easy. Creams work in the same fashion but can come pre-lathered or lather directly onto the face with minimum effort. Neglecting to treat your face before shaving can result in painful irritation and ingrown hairs. Essential oils in shaving creams and soaps moisturize facial skin and reduce the risk of nicks and cuts. A dull blade can tear the skin, so be certain to use a sharp razor to shave.

Your skin needs protection from the sun, especially the sensitive skin of your face. Choose moisturizing lotions with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The SPF loosely indicates how much radiation from the sun is required to burn the skin through protective creams and lotions. A higher SPF provides more protection by absorbing more radiation than lower SPF formulations. Men with fairer skin tones should select products with a higher SPF to ensure protection. Sun damage can devastate skin and cause it to age prematurely. Liver spots, uneven skin tone and even skin cancer can develop at a very young age for people who do not use proper sun protection.

You can nourish your skin from the inside out. Skin growth gets a boost from vitamins C and E. Low-fat dairy products, salmon, flax, berries and other foods promote healthy skin by providing key nutrients for skin replenishment. Exercise keeps your heart healthy and ensures excellent blood flow to the tiny capillaries under the skin of your face. Exercise also reduces stress and stress-related skin conditions, which include an increase to sebaceous oil production, acne and eczema.
