The New Youth Pill, Can It Get You Great Skin?

December 28th, 2011

I’m always in search for new and improved ways to tackle aging skin and my goal, as I’m sure yours is too, is to look naturally young even years from now.

I happened to come across an article in the October 2011 of Harper’s Bazaar. “The New Youth Pills” and how you can get great skin.

Supplements and nutrition flank aging concerns and dominate them, aiding your skin greatly. This reinforces your skincare routine and slows down aging considerably as healthy, youthful skin starts from within.

However, a word of caution, supplements alone can’t help you but must be used in conjunction with nutritious foods, and the two can help make you immune to aging and make you fabulous at every age.

Can Two Supplements Slow Aging?

Excerpts of Harper’s Bazaar in Italics.

You exercise and eat right, but your body is getting older each year. You just have to accept it right? Maybe not. “Aging is typically seen as inevitable, but it’s actually a condition that is treatable,” says Harvard geneticist David Sinclair. “Our bodies have an extraordinary ability to repair themselves”.

Two increasingly popular supplements, resveratrol and TA-65, seem to tap into those healing mechanisms. In Separate studies, these plant-derived compounds have been shown to activate enzymes in mice that trigger their bodies’ DNA repair process. Those enzymes exist in our bodies too, and now everyone from pro athletes and A-listers to the doctors who treat them are downing pills in hopes of providing a kick-start. Should you?

As perhaps everyone knows by now resveratrol is an antioxidant and therefore has anti-aging benefits. And according to scientific reports, taking resveratrol supplements may be extremely effective for maintaining optimal health and promoting longevity.

In 2006, Sinclair helped break the news that resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine, appeared to activate enzymes called sirtuins, which exist in our cells but tend to become less active in midlife. (Enzymes regulate chemical process that help keep our bodies functioning.)

Scientist think sirtuins, in addition to increasing DNA repair, promote cell survival, fat burning, and better sugar metabolism. “By activating the sirtuin SIRT1, resveratrol tricks the body into thinking it’s exercising and dieting even when it’s not,” says Sinclair.

This is why people taking resveratrol as a supplement notice 3 major characteristics of youth: increased energy, metabolism and concentration. Further research shows that it may also suppress inflammation.

And if you have read some of my earlier newsletters some doctors believe that by controlling inflammation you’ll minimize disease and maintain your skin’s health, keeping it younger and radiant.

Meanwhile, T.A. Sciences’ supplement T.A.-65, named for a molecule extracted from Chinese astragalus root, a potent antioxidant, reportedly activates our cells’ telomerase- another enzyme with anti-aging benefits.

Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of our DNA and this strand shortens each time the cell divides, leading to the death of the cell over time. T.A.-65 is said to restore telomeres and potentially by doing so reverse physical aging, turning back the clock.

However, there are reports that these two supplements, marketed to the 40 plus are controversial and could be very pricey pills. Additionally, much testing still needs to be conducted and human testing is still underway.

Geneticist David Sinclair states that this new focus on enzymes could help us win the war on aging and that is not a matter of if but when. He religiously takes his own formulation of resveratrol and swears by it’s results of smoother skin, thicker hair.

You can find resveratrol supplements at Wholefoods and other health food stores. And although T.A-65 is not yet main stream, you can get astragalus root from the same health stores. This root has been used for centuries by Chinese medicine to help reduce stress, inflammation and oxidative damage.

Supplements, nutrition, the correct skincare products and professional spa services are all part of the youth code. And even though it might seem like much, all you need to do is take the first step, no matter how small and you’ll be on your way to living a healthier and younger lifestyle.
