What's Your Vision Of Winter Skin?
November 19th, 2011
What’s your vision of winter skin? If you cringed at the thought of it you are not alone. Dry skin of course can happen at any time during the year but during the winter it will GET worse.
Find out why your skin tends to be dry in winter and how to solve this skincare concern before it gets out of hand and becomes what’s known as “winter itch”.
Imagine Properly Hydrated Winter Skin
Normal healthy skin is roughly 20-35% water. During the course of the average day, your skin may lose a pint of water just being in the office, or carrying on your normal routine.
During the winter months, when the environments both inside and outside become less humid, the skin’s water content can drop considerably- to about 10%.
In addition, low temperatures and strong harsh winds deplete your skin of its natural oily layer, which normally would keep your skin from drying out.
Once the lipid layer of your skin is gone, there is nothing from preventing heating sources from sucking any remaining moisture from your skin.
Therefore to keep your skin soft and supple, your goal is not just to add moisture to your skin, but to keep moisture in.
Otherwise the consequence of this lack of hydration is redness, itchiness and flaky skin. The skin is less able to heal itself and certainly less able to exfoliate and stay healthy.
You must protect your skin during the winter and following a regiment of internal hydration and using a moisturizer that locks in moisture will keep your skin supple and dewy.
