The 411: Mara Hoffman
If there were a designer for each season, Mara Hoffman just might have the corner on summer. That’s thanks in great part to those ecstatic psychedelic prints, which have, over the years, become her calling card. Hoffman, who holds degrees from both Parsons and Central Saint Martins, launched her first line, Circle by Mara Hoffman, with idiosyncratic hand-dyed and batik dresses that were an immediate hit with the downtown set. It evolved into her current eponymous brand in 2005, and three years later Hoffman translated her wildly imagined fabrics into equally covetable swimwear. Since then, her ascent in the world of summer wear has been fast and furious. With the season’s cusp just a few days behind us, we couldn’t think of a more fitting subject to quiz about warm-weather beauty essentials.
The Skin Resuscitator: Joanna Vargas
“I recently started getting light-therapy facials with Joanna at Joanna Vargas Skincare, and I’ve seen immediate results from that. I’m also a huge fan of her skincare products, especially her Exfoliating Mask. It feels so good to get rid of all of the grit and grime that comes with living in the city.”

The Complexion Correctors: SkinCeuticals and Clarisonic
“For my everyday skincare, I’ve been using SkinCeuticals products for years. I especially love their C E Ferulic serum. I use it at night, after washing my face and before moisturizer. And I’m a total devotee of the Clarisonic brush. I use it once a day—I love anything that exfoliates.”

The Makeup Must-Haves: Personal Favorites
“I’ve never been a huge makeup person, but there are a few products that I stick with. For everyday use to even out my skin tone, I use Chanel’s Hydramax Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15. I’m a huge advocate of sunscreen, so it’s really important to me that I protect my face—La Mer’s The SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid is my go-to. For mascara, I rotate between Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Lash and Maybelline’s classic Great Lash. I always have Caudalie’s Lip Conditioner on me. If I’m feeling extra fancy, I’ll throw on eyeliner, using a traditional Indian charcoal stick.”
Available at www.chanel.com, www.cremedelamer.com, www.sephora.com, www.ulta.com, and.
The Bronzing Basic: Clarins
“I’ve always been a fan of this sort of Moroccan-gypsy look, with bronze desert skin and a smoky eye. Sometimes I use Clarins self-tanner mixed into my moisturizer in the morning to give me a little bit more of a sun-kissed look. That being said, I tend to stay pretty basic with my everyday look.”
Available at www.clarinsusa.com.
The Exercise Ritual: Yoga
“I’ve found it pretty tough to fit working out into my schedule after having my son, but I’ve been a yogi for many, many years. Whenever I can make it to a class, I’ll head to one of a few studios in my neighborhood. I like to stick close to my home, and if I can fit a class in, I’ll try to go to the Kula Yoga studio in Williamsburg. We also try to have 8 a.m. yoga sessions at the office a few times a month.”

The Spa Twofer: Great Jones and Canyon Ranch
“To relax, I’m a huge fan of Great Jones Spa—I’ll spend some time relaxing in the steam room, and then get a great massage. I’ve been fortunate enough to go on a few amazing getaways with my mom at Canyon Ranch, which is a surefire way to rejuvenate in a couple of days. At Canyon Ranch, I’ll take a few yoga classes, as well as [get] body scrubs and wraps, deep-cleansing facials, and massages.”

The Mind Mellower: Meditation
“On a day-to-day basis, my daily meditation always keeps me in check and definitely helps me feel better on the inside and the outside. I learned Vedic meditation from Charlie and Thom Knoles. It’s a mantra-based meditation that I try to do twice a day, for twenty minutes each, but with my busy schedule, I usually end up getting one meditation in the morning.”

The Singular Scent: Essential Blend
“My go-to is a mix of Escentric Molecules, or Egyptian musk oil and pine oil. I like to describe my scent as ‘hippie Christmas tree.’ I picked up a bottle of the Pinon Pine Essential Oil on a trip to Oregon and have been shipping it out here ever since. I also love the Lakshmi Fragrance by The Goddess Line; it’s the perfect blend of Egyptian musk, patchouli, and sandalwood.”

The Inside-Out Beautifier: Breville Juicer
“While treatments and products are awesome, I also believe that feeling good starts with what you put into your body. I notice a genuine difference in my skin when I drink enough water and have a good green juice every day. My husband actually got me a Breville juicer for Mother’s Day, which has been amazing! My favorite recipe is kale, spinach, broccoli, celery, green apple, cucumber, and if I’m not feeling well, a couple shots of echinacea and ginger.”
